since i'm the one who buys the groceries and cooks the meals i have decided that it is increasingly important to provide natural and heathful food for the boys and myself. so i've done a lot of research and homework on which foods are important to eat natural or organic and what are some of the things that we could save on. i don't want to increase my grocery bill so its going to take a little work and dedication on my part to buy the right things and use everything that i buy. i went and checked out Costco today - haven't been in a long time - and they have a new "all natural" and USDA organic certified line of chicken and beef. its really not that much more expensive than buying regular protein but i'll have to freeze and plan meals so none of it goes to waste. watching something like Food Inc will definitely make you think twice about what you eat...

long weekend

Chandler has promised me a guest blog about his and Cash's visit to Oregon so stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, Coop and I have just been enjoying our time together. its actually been really nice to just bond with him. after thinking about it i realized it was in the hospital when we had our last one-on-one time and i wasn't in much of a mood then. so we haven't been terribly motivated to tackle the "to do" list but rather spent a lot of time just playing and giggling and snuggling. i've let him take 2 naps in my arms which isn't something that we can do when big brother is around. right now he is just snoozing on my chest and i think i'll just let the dirty dishes just sit in the sink a little longer (no one is here to be bothered by them anyway).

Separation Anxiety

Anxiety is right. we've been going through some major stuff over here at the Martin household lately. Now, I really try not to self diagnose or armchair doctor but it is safe to say that Cash is struggling with serious separation anxiety. it started pretty innocently with not wanting to be dropped off at daycare which turned into not wanting to let mommy or daddy leave the room or get in the shower or do anything away from him to a full on night time explosion when going to bed. We do our normal night time routine and as we are finishing our last book and saying our "night-nights" Cash will beg and plead for you not to leave. "Lay with me a little longer," or "sleep in my bed tonight" or "no mommy, don't go" are his usual. When you tell him no and leave the room he goes hysterical and screams and cries and kicks the door in a panic. i've tried to do my research and make sure that this is "normal" and that he isn't bordering on a disorder and it seems that this is pretty typical for 2.5 year old kids but that doesn't make it any easier to hear.
The other night he woke up at 1am screaming for me and we couldn't get him back to sleep until 4:30am (when Cooper promptly woke up!). He was trying anything and everything he could to stay awake and to keep me in his sights.
The past 2 nights have been better. we put him to bed and he screamed for about 30 minutes, i went in and laid with him and he fell asleep. i probably shouldn't have gone in but he was totally hysterical and just getting more and more worked up. he was asleep by 8:30 though and slept through the night. Last night he wasn't asleep when Chandler left the room (he was singing "Sunny days, taking the clouds away, Elmo's world" - the mash-up!) but he fell asleep on his own. He gave us two good screams in the middle of the night (1:30am) but never really woke up. He got up at 5:30am which i will take as a victory. I asked him about screaming in the night, he said he woke up because he was sad and wanted mommy but i don't know if he actually remembers.
Anyway, Chandler and Cash go to Oregon tonight so we'll see how this screws everyone's sleep up - except Cooper and I, we are going to sleep for 3 days straight!!

when cooper is complaining Cash will run to him and say, "its ok baby, your brother is here." We were upstairs today and he heard Cooper starting to fuss. He looked at me and said, "cooper needs me" and rushed downstairs, the whole time yelling out, "its ok Cooper, i'm coming. Mommy is upstairs, daddy is right there, Chachi is here." He really takes care of his little bro.

this about sums it up

we did not sleep well last night. Cash was up all night. Cooper was up more than usual. making this a painful Sunday. its also cold and windy today so we're all off our game today.

take 2: potty training

tonight, on a whim, Cash saw some pee pee coming and ran to sit on the toilet. nothing was happening and he got up to wash his hands but turned around and said, "there's another toot in there." he sat back down and pee'd and then - without warning a big old, stinky poop fell out! we all got really excited and did the dance and then ate candy. he was really excited and proud, he's got some work to do in the wiping department but i can officially say that he pee'd and pooped on the toilet. such a proud momma am I.

nice to meet you

Cash must have learned how to meet people because this morning he stuck out his hand and said, "shake hands mommy, its nice to meet you." then we shook hands. it was funny. probably funny because it was so random and out of the blue. he's a sponge.

Cooper only woke up once last night. i actually put him in a sleep sack. don't know why, i never put Cash in one, but it was there and well, why not. he seemed to do well and it didn't prohibit his rolling like i thought. and he woke up all warm and cozy.

Mid-May

Cooper is eating everything in sight. he loves food and eats at Sylvia's and at dinner time with us. I really like these new foods i found that are a fruit and veg combo and cooper seems to like them too. i still mix it with a little cereal.

Cooper made a semi-solid turd this morning. and when i went to show Cash (because he insists on seeing the "yucky poop") he said - and i quote - "oh my goodness Cooper." That's a new one.

Cash continues to be spirited. He really doesn't like to go to Sylvias these days and throws a big fit when we drop them off. I don't really know what to do about this. i hate to say that he'll just grow out of it because that seems a little cold. i'm comforted by the fact that most "experts" say that separation anxiety is normal at this age but no one really tells you how to overcome it. i try to tell Cash that he doesn't have to worry because we'll come back to get him and he says ok but then he gets all worked up anyway.

thought you all should know

Cooper and Cash look nothing alike anymore. its like all of a sudden cooper's face got really long and his hair got really light. their eye shape is even different now.
wow.

its tomorrow

Cash slept from 3pm on Saturday to 7am on Sunday. i guess he was tired. i went to wake him from his nap at 6pm but he just turned over and kept sleeping. we were sure we were going to hear from him in the middle of the night but nothing. i even went in to check on him around 2am but he was sleeping. he's awake now and very hungry.

HAIRCUT!!

HAIRCUT!!, originally uploaded by carolyn_martin.

Cash got a haircut today, finally. his mop-top had to go so we went to a new place and just told them to make it short. i think he looks so handsome. he did a really, really good job though and didn't cry, fuss or even pout. he got to sit in a car and watch Toy Story.

Friday night fun

Watching the dance off!, originally uploaded by carolyn_martin.

one of our favorite things to do lately is go down to the District on Friday nights. There are always a lot of people there and plenty of kid friendly things to do. Usually we spend our time on the other side of the shopping center where the movies in the park are but tonight we decided to have a little dinner and walk the prominade. we happened upon a little kid dance party with a fun 80s band that all the little kids were going crazy over. Cash warmed up after a while and went running back and forth across the "dance floor".

today we did something really fun and went to the Historic Southern Nevada Railway Museum. We took a 7 mile ride on a train that took about an hour - it was slow. Cash was really thrilled the whole time to be riding on a train.
We spent a long time walking around the yard looking at a lot of the old trains which was pretty interesting.
Cash was so excited that he was going to ride on a train that the first words that came out of his mouth this morning were, "i'm ready to go on a train now."

Cash LOVES matchbox cars. he has quite a collection going because this is definitely an obsession that Chandler and I can get behind. When Cash and Chandler go to Oregon in a couple weeks they have big plans to get Chandler's car collection down out of the attic.

a cut above the rest

last night was a model night! lets do that more often, boys.
besides the harried rush to get home and get dinner on the table i would take that night every night! (can you tell i'm excited).
at 8pm i put Cash in bed, read some stories and said good night. he was tired but as i was leaving he asked me to stay. i told him that i had to go check on Cooper but if he couldn't fall alseep i would come back to see him. I didn't hear from him again and he slept all night. In. His. Bed.
Cooper cuddled up and slept in my arms from 8:30pm-10pm. At 10 i fed him a big ol' bottle and put him down (awake but very tired), he flipped over and slept until 3:30am - got up for a little snack and went back to sleep until 7am (when he woke up with a very poppy diaper). Cash came-a-knockin' at 6:30, we played in the playroom for a little bit and then headed off to school!
yay us!

although it wasn't all roses - Cash really likes scissors. he wants to use scissors all the time. he knows how to use them but i'm not comfortable with him using them without complete supervision and since the mornings are spent rushing all around the house i couldn't sit down with him and let him cut paper like he wanted. this made him cry but he does this thing now where he will cry and once he stops crying he will come to me and say, "i'm all better now mommy." then he'll talk about "i was crying and now i stopped and i'm all better." I think this is a pretty good thing.

check that: 5 months and 1 day

last night Cooper was rolling over from front to back and back to front and he was on his tummy when he woke up this morning.

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

shocking: Cooper James is 5 months

can't believe he is getting so big, so fast. time definitely goes faster with the 2nd.
he can:
grab toys - if there is something hanging from his car seat of playmat he'll reach out to grab it.
chew on everything
puts his feet in his mouth
knows his name (turns his head when you call it.)
rolls from front to back and can almost (3/4) get over from back to belly.
stands up when you hold him on his feet.
talks - which tickles Cash to no end. mostly he says, ohhh, ahhh and gaaaa.

happy 5 months big guy

better (warning: poop story ahead)

Cooper was better last night. only woke up once - well, once that i'm counting.
he went to bed at 10pm, woke up to eat at 1am. at 4:30 he was screaming! i went in to see him covered, head to toe, in mustardy poop. he had pooped, it had escaped, he had rolled around. 'nuf said. so at 4:30am i was washing a baby. but he settled back down and slept for the rest of the early morning.
Cash also slept until about 7am which is better than his recent 6am. and i realized that maybe there is a little acting in this boy's future. Cash was sitting on my bed watching me get ready for work (which i like because he usually says that i look pretty!) When i closed my door to check out the full length mirror he said, "you looking in the mirror mommy." I said yes and then he said, "you see you crying in the mirror mommy?" and then the lightbulb went off. He has a mirror on the back of his door as well and something tells me that when he is crying before he falls asleep he is watching himself in the mirror - thus causing a lot of "fake crying" just to see himself cry.

this is not fun

Cash continues to be "spirited" and Cooper is not sleeping well. so i'm a bit frazzled. Chandler is keeping us all together by doing what he does best - staying calm and taking care of all the "other stuff".

Cash just screamed - and i mean screamed, not cried - in his room for 30 minutes before falling asleep. it just about broke my heart and i had to use a lot of will power to not run upstairs to him. We kept reminding ourselves that he is ok and just needs to work it out. Cash is incredibly persistent and he would really take advantage of the opportunity to get out of his room.

Sylvia also called me tonight about Cooper today to tell me that he's not really eating at her house. he'll eat his jar of veggies but she can't get him to eat more than a couple ounces at a time. And he hasn't been sleeping more than a couple hours at a time. He will wake up to eat very frequently. His cheeks are all pink and he's blowing raspberries constantly so i wonder if he has teething pain. we'll keep our eye on it.

my first "home made" mother's day pressie! thanks Cash!

Mother's Day 2.0

So far mother's day as a mother of 2 is wonderful. Friday when i got home I received a fantastic gift that Cash had made at daycare. I'm sure i'll get lots of use out of this visor :).
We decided to not try to fight any of the Sunday crowds - since our behavior these days is hit-or-miss - and went to dinner tonight. We love to spend time at The District - a nice, outdoor shopping area so we chose to go to one of the restaurants there. Cheesecake Factory seemed the best for kids so we hit it up and even got dessert! Afterwards we walked over to the carousel and Cash rode on the panda bear and unicorn. Luckily, the weather tonight was really pleasant and we stayed out for a long, long time. Cash made lots of little friends and they chased each other all around the little park. it was also movie night in the park (but we didn't stay and watch the whole thing) so there were extra people there to add to the fun.
my kiddos are really the greatest and i'm so lucky they made me a mother. Happy Mother's Day to all.

Cooper does

fever #2

Cash is sick. I'm not sure what is going on but there is something bugging him. He's only really been sick one other time in his life! Sure, he's had sniffles and runny noses and the usual germy and teething stuff but none of that ever slowed him down. Yesterday, Sylvia called me as I was on my way to go pick the boys up and said that she wanted me to know Cash is sick and she had given him some medicine (don't worry, not any of the recalled stuff). I picked him up and didn't see anything too out of the ordinary but as soon as we got home he went down hill fast. He ate a little bit of dinner and played a very little bit but then he started to cry - the painful cry - and just wanted to snuggle. He said that his tummy hurt and he wanted me to rub it and also pointed to his head hurting. I got a little worried because Gabby had hit him on the head with a toy and made a pretty good egg so i thought that he might have a concussion but he didn't. Anyway, Cash started to get really, really hot and uncomfortable so we gave him some more meds. He wouldn't let me hold him belly to belly, he just wanted to lay with his back to me because he said it hurt his tummy. I prepared for vomit and poop but nothing. He asked to go up to bed and was asleep within 5 minutes (that was a good thing).
This morning he woke up and was even hotter than last night so more motrin down the hatch. Then he laid on the couch for a good hour and watched Elmo while daddy and Cooper got ready for the day. I had already showered and dressed but decided that i'd stay home with him. Well, i guess the motrin kicked in because he wanted to play with Mimi and Danny after a while. Then he asked for some sausage and got really upset when he realized that Cooper wasn't at home (he went on to Sylvia's). So we got dressed, grabbed a sausage bagel and took some lollipops to his friends at school.
I told Greg to call me if there was a problem and i haven't heard from him yet. i'll go get him early just in case but it might have just been a quick bug.

the hole goes in the front

Sylvia says that Cash is the only one at daycare who puts his clothes on right. (and Cooper is exempt).
Although, each morning he picks a pair of shoes out of my closet and insists on putting them on my feet - the wrong feet. I guess he'll need to figure that one out before getting a job at Nordstrom's shoe dpt. (for the discount of course).

i petting him

Cash really loves Cooper. I've mentioned it before but he has always loved him and never rejected him. Now Cash is really into consoling Cooper when he gets fussy. I'll hear Cash say, "its ok Cooper, i'm right here" or "don't worry Cooper, mommy's coming" (and then he'll scream MOMMMMY). and sometimes he'll just lay down on the floor with Cooper and rub his head and say, "i petting cooper". Only sometimes, like when Cooper is sleeping, i wish Cash was less interested in Cooper!

Cash has become a little jealous and selfish lately. so we are learning about sharing - especially sharing Mommy. Cash will say that I am his Mommy and when i remind him that I am both his mommy and Cooper's mommy he will say NO. and sometimes if Cash is feeling especially needy he wants to be carried everywhere - i think this is so i cant pick up Cooper. Good thing Cooper is so laid back - he will just sit and watch the Cash show.

Eat, Sleep, Poop, Coop

Cooper has decided that he doesn't sleep through the night anymore and instead is making up for all the lost waking hours and gets up every 2-3 hours at night to eat. i've got to figure out a solution to this little problem or i'm going to be a very tired mamma. (last night he went down at 8, up at 10:30, 12:40, 2:30-3:30, 6:00). he's going through some developmental stages and i think i remember Cash doing this too. Cooper is teething like crazy, he shoves everything in his mouth and bites down HARD. If you carry him over your shoulder, watch out, he sucks and bites the skin between your shoulder and neck. He's really happy though.
Also, i've started giving him food - sweet potatoes - and he is doing well. He actually eats a good portion. At first i think he just liked bitting the spoon but then he realized there is something on the spoon and now he dives toward the spoon when its coming to his mouth. I put him in the high chair and the bumbo and he does better in the bumbo.
and Cooper laughs all the time. i don't remember Cash laughing really at all. but Cooper just finds things so funny. you can just say his name and he will giggle uncontrollably. Cash loves to make him laugh.

i pee'd

over the weekend Cash started wearing underwear - or "panties" as he calls them (much too his daddy's dismay). I planned on having him home for 3 days over memorial day weekend and just getting potty training out of the way but turns out that Cash and Chandler are going on a little trip to Oregon that weekend. So Saturday morning i was telling Chandler that i'll have to change plans so i went out and got some new underpants (Buzz, Woody and the Sesame Street gang) to be prepared. Well, Cash took one look at them and said, "i want to wear those panties" and for the rest of the weekend he only wore panties - except for bed and nap time. He never actually pee'd in the toilet although we "visited" and "attempted" a lot. He would sit down and say, "i all done" and then get up and look in and say, "i not done" and sit down again. We chalked it up to a lot of practice. He wet his pants a couple times but nothing too bad. We even went on a pretty long bike ride and he didn't have an accident. HOpefully he'll want to continue to wear panties and use the potty. I think once he figures out he can pee in the potty he'll want to do it all the time - its just the inital pee that might take a while.
Today we sent him to Sylvia's in a diaper with undies over top.
