"Cooper is learning how to talk good"

Cash reminds me daily that he is teaching Cooper how to talk. its very sweet. Cooper now says lots of words - although if you don't live in our house i wonder if you'd be able to pick up on them. He says "balloon" and "ball" all the time now. "Nigh-night" and "thank you" are two very popular phrases right now also. But more than anything Cooper loves to give "five". he says it and sticks his hand out for everyone to slap! so cute.

always happy

somehow Cooper got sick. and i really would not have thought a thing of it except he was wheezing a bit during his sleep so the next day i took him to the doctor. he was laughing and playing with Cash while we waited for the doctor and he was so patient and relaxed while the doctor looked at him we were all surprised with the diagnosis. He has another ear infection and a croupy cough. the doctor said that she was totally surprised because he was so good tempered (a different doctor today). but we got something for the cough and something for the ear and were out of there no worse for wear.

Cooper said "belly" this morning

When i was taking his overnight diaper off Cooper pointed to his belly and said, "belly". it was loud and clear. i guess it only makes sense that this is among his first (real) words.

snotty noses

both boys had a great weekend but they were sneezie, snotty, puffy messes by the end. i really think it might be allergies because they have the same exact symptoms and no fever - i don't really know thought. Cash is in an incredibly adorable loving stage right now telling us how much he loves us. and how much he likes us. he loves to cuddle and snuggle and is just really, really sweet. Cooper is such a fun little boy too. he loves his daddy and brother - he can probably take or leave me - and always follows them around and makes sure he knows where they are at all times. He is pretty tough and isn't afraid to get into it with his brother. We are glad to have the nice weather back and tonight the boys were playing outside in the street with the other kids when i got home. Cash went down to Devin's house to play while i got dinner cooked and then Cooper and i came down in the wagon to get him. we're all excited for Spring! Grandma and Poppy come at the end of this week and Cash can't wait to play Candyland with everyone. He has asked every day for the past 3 days if Grandma and Poppy were here yet. i guess he's pretty excited. I'm getting ready to go to High Point so I really hope everyone survives while i'm gone (including me).

Dear American Academy of Pediatrics,
you try telling Cooper he needs to be facing backwards again.
Good luck,
Carolyn

It looks like Cooper is starting to really stick up for himself. Today he slapped Cash across the face and laughed. i know he didn't do this on purpose but its hard to explain that to Cash. he loves to chase Cash around - the two of them can really get into trouble fast, running around, slamming doors.
He copies Cash in all sorts of things. making noises, facial expressions are two things i noticed today that Cooper did right after Cash did them.
Today i also caught him dragging the laundry basket over to the window, flipping it upside down and climbing up on it. he stood on it and looked out the window for quite a few minutes before thought it would be funny to fall off - hoping that someone would catch him. (we did).
He also loves to call out for Cash. whenever Cash isn't in the room or Cooper is looking for him, he'll call "Cash" until he finds him.
today i thanked Cash for doing something i asked him to do. his response: "it's my pleasure."

cash has been doing such an awesome job with pooping. Dr. G warned us that it may take some time for his brain and body to reconnect but since he's been cleaned out (i think we got the last of the old stinkies out late last week) he's had no accidents. he will tell us when he has to poop and everything is in the potty! yay Cash!

Touch a Truck

DSC00110, originally uploaded by carolyn_martin.

today we went to Touch a Truck. It was freezing cold and windy but the boys had a good time. I think the weather caught everyone off guard, especially since it was 80 all week. The boys got to see/touch/sit in a tow truck, cement truck, ambulance, fire trucks, ladder truck, first responder truck, swat truck, big rig tow truck, dump truck, tractor, and more. But i think their favorite was some guy's Ford Ranger. i'm not even sure he was part of Touch a Truck. but they jumped in his little pick up and messed everything up! I was laughing because there were so many kids and they were just going to town in the cabs of these trucks/vehicles and i get frustrated when someone moves my rearview mirror! i can't imagine what happens when they fire up the tow truck the next time!
Cash was really excited about the fire trucks and enjoyed looking through the firemans' maps.
eventually we got too cold to stick around any longer and took Cooper home for a nap.

more brothers for Cash

last weekend Cash told me that he'd like more brothers and that these can be their names:
  1. Donald
  2. Train rider
  3. Baby Crawler
  4. Sister
Cooper is starting to put words together. mostly "hi Cash" or "bye daddy".
he is doing a lot of the things i remember Cash doing as a little boy like in the morning once i strap his shoes on him he makes a b-line for the door and says, "bye".
he climbs on anything. up on chairs, stools, into the car.
this morning he must have reached up onto the stove and tuned one of the knobs because we got home from work and the house was filled with gas - and smelled terrible. I got home and Chandler and the boys were just playing around. Chandler goes, "something stinks". Yeah, that's gas. Lets get out of here. we opened doors and windows, packed up dinner and spent the evening at the park. It was a nice excuse but it wasn't as warm tonight as it has been the rest of the week.
I fear we are going to have to give Cooper a haircut this weekend. he is getting awfully scraggly. and people are calling him a girl much too often. No one EVER called Cash a girl. Cooper gets called a "her", "she", "girl" at least once every couple of months. Just last weekend it happend twice. in one weekend! and he was dressed in obvious boy clothes. blues and more blue. he is beautiful though.

full of it

Cash has been having some real problems lately but i think we are on the mend - so now i can talk about it.
For the past few months, longer than I would like to admit, he has been having very intense problems with his tummy. He just wouldn't poop. Cash had been a perfect potty user up until that point. I dont think he ever had an accident since he started wearing underpants. It started with a little constipation probably because he didn't have enough water one day or maybe he didn't want to stop what he was doing to go to the bathroom. However it happened he got constipated, it was hard to poop and it hurt. When it finally did come out it caused some small tears in his bottom which cause him a lot of pain with subsequent poops. So he just decided to stop. stop pooping altogether. he would squeeze his bottom together so hard that he wouldn't let the poop come out. this was causing everyone a lot of stress. Cash was upset and cranky a lot of the time. He was so full of it nothing made him happy. Mommy and Daddy were getting increasingly frustrated that he wouldn't just unclench his butt and go! so after a couple very serious days of unhappiness we went to see the doctor. He was going up to 7 days without anything so we had to get some professional help. Especially after an enema didn't work. Cash overpowered an enema! Dr. Goebel was great. She told us he had an impacted bowel and encopresis (you can google it but just know that we were changing underpants up to 4 times a day) and gave us some ways to help Cash through this. Almost immediately his attitude changed. i think just hearing Dr. Goebel say that it was ok made him feel better (i'm sure mommy freaking out didn't help him). So we started Cash on 2 Miralax treatments per day (this is a lot!) and after 2 days we had to give him an enema. WOW. I will just say this: he was seriously backed up. And now that the blockage has been moved and the softener is working he is going a lot. but unfortunately his bowel is a little "untrained" so he's having a lot of accidents. we need to figure out what the right amount of Miralax is for him and make sure we encourage him to use the potty. he'll start doing better. he's already doing better.

Pirate Cash

If Cash isn't careful he's gonna get his wish of becoming a real pirate with a real hook. He loves to play sword fighting and most of the time it isn't a battle i'm willing to fight with him. He takes the butter knives out of the drawer and runs around with them. last night he got his hands on one of the serrated knives from the dishwasher and almost immediately cut his hand - pretty badly. It pretty much ruined the rest of his night and all he wanted to do was snuggle with me on the couch while i applied pressure to his wound. Unfortunately the cut is in a very uncomfortable place and will surely get bumped and snagged all day today. He refused to put a bandaid on it. I did hear him tell his daddy that we can't play with swords anymore. so at least he learned his lesson. for today.

Catching up on February: all the other stuff edition

After Grammy got an unwelcomed wake up call we said our good bye's and took her to the airport. The next weekend we all had a 3 day weekend and Chandler decided to take us on a little trip to somewhere new. The weather in Las Vegas was cold and rainy so rather than spending the day inside we spend a few hours in the car and drove over to California to see the Santa Monica pier. The boys had a great time playing on the beach and Cash loved running in the water. the weather was again perfect (seems to be a theme for California). We didn't spend the night so at about 4pm we got a bite to eat at a really amazing shopping center just a couple blocks from the pier and hit the road again. it was a great way to spend a Sunday since we still had 2 full days to get all our weekend errands done. Except that i'm still knocking sand out of pockets!

The boys have been extremely active these days. i think its just that Cooper is 100% mobile and causing chaos and destruction wherever he goes. he's tough as nails compared to Cash who has always been more sensitive. I'm glad that spring is right around the corner because having them outside seems to diffuse a lot of the craziness. And Cash and Chandler are getting pretty good at hitting the wiffle balls of the tee.

Catching Up on February: Disneyland edition

First of all, sorry i've been so quiet lately. i've had some serious computer issues and honestly there is very little time for me to do these things lately. I have two little boys running my life right now. and they rarely schedule time for blogging.
ok, enough excuses. February has been fun, busy and stressful all at the same time.
I got through with market and moved right into my birthday. it was nice. i took the day off work to spend the day by myself! i cleaned, i ran errands, i was very busy. that night Chandler took me to dinner and a movie - we saw the King's Speech and i thought it was very good. Chandler might have fallen asleep. We didn't do anything for the Superbowl and that was just fine with us.
Grammy showed up the next week to spend some time with the boys and take us to Disneyland. I was totally shocked when Cash asked if Wiley was coming with us because it had been months (Christmas) since we had talked about that. Luckily, by the time we actually got to Disneyland Cash had forgotten about it. We left for Disney in the afternoon and after a short plane ride, long wait for a bus and what felt like an even longer shuttle ride, we got there in one piece. The boys were pretty crazy the first night and no one slept well. we ordered room service and just tried to keep calm as the boys destroyed the hotel room. looking back we probably could have just given them a few garbage cans to push around and stack and they would have been fine.
The next morning we headed over to the park. It was a great experience and the weather was perfect. We rode a handful of rides quickly before the boys started to get hungry. Its a small world seems to be the ultimate crowd pleaser. Cash was totally amazed and Cooper was dancing along. It was also a nice opportunity to cool off as the weather started to get a little warmer. we had lunch and went on a few more rides with Cash as Cooper napped in his stroller. It turns out that as much as Cash likes pirates he does NOT like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. He's never clung to me tighter. as the ride was pulling back into the loading station he said to Chandler and I, "I never, never, ever want to go on that ride again." I'll be sure to remind him of that when he's older. His most favorite ride, ironically, was the Jungle Cruise which i was informed that i didn't enjoy as a little girl. But i swear that they made that boat much smaller now and the animals used to be real. We headed back across the monorail to our hotel in the late afternoon for some rest time and dinner. Cooper fell asleep in his stroller again right after dinner so Grammy and I went back to the room to put him down while Chandler and Cash stayed in Downtown Disney and looked in the shops. Except i don't think they got much further than the Lego store. Cooper was out for the count so i headed back out to meet up with Chandler and Cash and we watched the fireworks and then headed back for a much better 2nd night's sleep.
The next day we got up and had breakfast with Goofy and the rest of the Disney Characters. We were visited by Chip, Dale, Jasmine, Baloo, Pluto and others. Cooper just ate and ate and ate. We headed back home that afternoon.
We all really enjoyed our first trip to Disneyland and are thankful for our Grammy!
