Talking back

Cash has gotten a little brave lately with his talking back. Every time I ask him something he turns it back on me.
"Cash, please go put your shoes on." "You go put your shoes on."
"Do it again and you'll get a time-out." "You'll get a time-out."
and sometimes it really doesn't make any sense.
"Cash, we need to make a list of what you want Santa to bring." "You make a list of what you want Santa to bring."

So, he was in need of serious redirecting. Over the weekend we brought out the big guns. A nightly letter from Mommy to Santa, recounting the days good and bad points. It has actually made Cash go out of his way to do nice things. Like yesterday he was really nice and helpful to Cooper (sharing and helping) and then immediately asked me if I would put that in my letter. Let's hope we can keep this up for the next month!

Cooper Poops

Cooper has become very aware of the goings on in his diaper. And he isn't amused. He hates to have pee in his diaper and gets the saddest look on his face when he realizes what's happening. Always just a little too late to get to the potty but we'll get there. Yesterday I had to change his pee diaper 6 times and every time he wanted me to sit him on the potty. Then later in the day he started saying poooop! So we went and sat on the potty but he'd get bored and would get up right away. I asked Cash to come in with us and entertain Cooper. And he did. Cash was dancing and singing and acting silly and tickling Cooper (which resulted in him actually tumbling off the potty) but eventually Cooper's eyes got really big and he made a poop come out. A real poop! We all did the potty dance and everyone got a candy for a job well done.

sickies

The boys have been pretty sick for the past 2 weeks. coughs, sniffles, sore throats, stuffed noses - the works. Cash seemed to be having the worst of it with his coughing so we took them both to urgent care the other night. It was crowded and everyone in there was sicker than the last person. The doctor was very nice and looked at the boys. He diagnosed Cash with bronchitis and pink eye and Cooper with pink eye and a cold. He loaded us up with very expensive prescriptions and sent us on our way. The next couple nights were the worst. Cash was up all night long and his coughing was constant. He wasn't getting any better and Cooper started coughing more so we made an appointment to go see their regular doctor. She took one look at Cash - and Chandler (who is apparently the sickest of all of us) - and said, "you guys are sick and you look like you have the flu." We told her about our urgent care experience and she told us that it was all wrong. The diagnosis was wrong and the medicine and dosing was wrong (too little).
Cash had a low oxygen level so he had to get a breathing treatment to break up the croup. He didn't like it at first but after we convinced him that it was just like Darth Vader (dark vader) he was ok with it. Then he had to get a shot in the leg - the medicine was the same as what was in the breathing treatment but was a little longer lasting. He also had a raging ear infection (which the urgent care doctor said he didn't have) so he got antibiotics for that. And he doesn't have pink eye - the gunk and swelling is just from the sinus pressure so no more eye drops for the boys (they are very pleased). Cash was getting some relief immediately as evidenced by the nap he took in the car on the way home - he hasn't slept more than a few hours in a row since he started coughing.
We set both boys up with Vaporizors at home and while there was still a lot of coughing going on last night it sounded different and we had a "full" night's sleep.

Me: Cash, did you play with Brookie today?
C: Yeah, but Galia is prettier so I played with her more.

"Brookie"

or Brooklyn to everyone else but Cash. Brookie is Cash's bestie at school. She is always there in the morning and welcomes him with a hug. She chases Cash all over the room and tries to tickle him. Brookie is funnier than mommy and/or daddy. Brookie has pretzels for lunch and now we do too. Brookie, Brookie, Brookie!
Also, we saw Trevor at Sam's Club this weekend. It is very strange to have your kid say hi and start talking to another little boy out in public and not know the parents. We quickly realized that the boys were school mates but actually not in the same classroom. That's the really interesting thing about this school, even though all the classes are separate, everyone knows everyone else. Trevor is a ladybug. We are butterflies. It must sound strange to overhear someone introduce themself as a butterfly but it makes perfect sense to us.

BTW: our camera is broken if you are wondering why there haven't been new pictures lately

Cash got his first real bike!

Cooper poop potty

Cooper loves to sit on the potty. He has a little mini-seat that he keeps under the sink and he loves to run into the bathroom and get it out and sit on it. he never actually does anything but he is always very happy. he also pulls all the toilet paper out if he is left unsupervised! but tonight I caught him just as the right moment after his bath, crouching in the corner and we went and got on the potty and he actually pooped. he was so excited and happy for himself. he jumped off the seat and ran over to daddy and gave him a huge hug and said, "Cooper. Poop. Potty."
Last week Devin and Cash were playing tow trucks with the bike and the little car and somehow Cash got caught up in the rope and got a nasty rope burn on his neck. A very unfortunate location for a child that goes to a daycare that tracks every little scrape. The situation was very bad and very intense becaue the rope was old and the fibers came off in his neck and he was hot and sweaty so it stung really, really badly and he cried and howled for 30 minutes straight about it.

He was brave and it's healing well but the challenge now is going to be getting him not to pick the scab. He is very proud of himself when he peels a section of scab off.

Cooper is putting more and more words together. This weekend he spoke his first three-word sentence, "Cash spilled water." Busted, brother!

20 mile run (boring stuff, don't read)

For posterity’s sake

Saturday, September 10, 2011: 20 Miles
I woke up at 4am to get out of the house at 4:40 to meet Ruth at the Starbucks so we could ride downtown together. Still dark out, we met up and drove together downtown to the 9.11 Remembrance race. There were almost 1,100 runners so we squeezed our way into the starting line. The course was very strange and neither one of us knew it so it felt a lot longer than it was. It was a 9.11k (5.6mile) run through downtown Las Vegas. The course weaved up and down the downtown blocks. It was pretty humid that morning. I finished the 5.6 in 56.45 (10:02 pace). For me that’s pretty good, especially since my day wasn’t over at the finish line. Ruth and I finished the 9.11k race and hopped into the car and drove a mile up the street to park at World Market Center (we were more comfortable with that than running in scummy downtown).
We decided we’d just do an out and back since we knew the territory and it was relatively safe in terms of traffic, sidewalks and bike lanes. We ran up Alta for 7.5 miles. The nice thing about this run is that Alta runs directly east-west so we knew the cross streets would be about every 1 or 2 miles depending. I kept the overall mileage and Ruth kept the “part 2” mileage. We started up Alta, past MLK and Rancho and then up past all the big fancy houses to the McDonalds at Decatur. We stopped inside. I slugged a few straw-fulls of orange juice and we were off again. The next mile was a huge hill and then Alta, running east-west, basically was all uphill from there. We kept going strong and mile 10 took another little break for water, gu and stretching. It was only going to be a couple more miles until we could turn around. The weather was perfect and overcast and it wasn’t hot at all. The humidity had almost seemed to subside as well. At about mile 11 or 12 the arch of my right foot started to ache so I made a point to land on the balls of my feet (which I should do anyway) and it seemed to help. We got to Durango and I remembered thinking how far away that was to where we started but it didn’t feel like we had been running that long – I think breaking the run into two separate events really helped mentally. I also remembered thinking that I was closer to home than I was to my car – which is a bizarre thought when running.
I wanted to turn around early, promising to make up the half mile on the other end but nope, Ruth wouldn’t let me. I knew I needed water (I was out) and some sort of electrolytes but there wasn’t a stop on Alta. We finally turned around and got another two miles down the road where we stopped inside the 24Hour Fitness gym for water, Gatorade and gu. We were both still feeling pretty good. I started to feel a little sore and tired around mile 10 (15.5 total for the day) but I knew that if I could get to the big hill before Decatur I would be so close to the finish line there was no way I wouldn’t make it. So I got there. The next light/mile was Valley View where I hurt my arm. Yes, I hurt my arm running. Actually, it was just a cramp but anyone who has had a bad cramp knows that pain can stick with you. I was trying to grab my foot to stretch out my quad but I couldn’t reach it and somehow wrenched my arm to a place that made it cramp up. So, while doing that I missed the light and had to wait for an extra couple minutes. But that was good because I think I needed the break to make the final 3+ miles home.
After we passed Rancho we were both really hurting but we were so close we just kept going straight back to the car.
So 20 miles for the day was in the books. I ran the whole thing. I kept thinking about how excited I was for the following weekend to only have to run 13. And I’m already trying to figure out a mental game-plan for 22. I will be very glad when this whole thing is over.

ugh! sometimes i could really use an instruction manual for Cash. Devin and Shannon (and Riley and Frank, our neighbors) are so nice and sweet and always share all their toys with our boys and I feel like Cash is so ungrateful. I totally get it that a three year old can't or wont totally grasp the concept of being polite - especially when you are having so much fun you never want it to end. But something has to change with Cash. Tonight he pushed Devin off the bike and flat out refused to apologize. It wouldn't have been a big deal except that Cash threw a fit when I asked him to say he was sorry. Devin wasn't hurt (thankfully) but his feelings were and I could tell that he could have used an apology. Of course, this ruined our evening play time and the party was over. Three and four year olds are so funny and honest. Cash didn't want to tell Devin he was sorry. And in turn, Devin vowed never to play with Cash again.
We got home and before any stories at bedtime I talked a long time to Cash about how important it was to treat your friends nicely and that I really wasn't happy that he did that to his friend and that he wouldn't apologize. He said, "but mommy, I was having so much fun on that bike I didn't want Devin to have it." And really, I get that but I just can't figure out how you explain cause and effect to a three year old. How do I get him to understand that if he pushes Devin (or anyone) the fun will stop. And the fun stopped as a direct result of something you did. And if you just wouldn't do stuff like that you could have a lot more fun. It's really the "if you're good then we can have a lot more fun" concept that I can't seem to get him to understand. He's incredibly impatient. And to be honest, it's embarrassing.
It's embarrassing to have the kid that freaks out when he doesn't get his way. When he should be old enough to at least get it a little bit. Devin gets it. I really hope we are going through some sort of phase right now because the past two weeks have been especially trying and I'm worried that Chandler and I will just pack our bags and leave soon.

sleep

I am amazed at how much a child's sleep is effected by change. It's no secret that my guys sleep well. Sure, we've gone through our ups and downs and phases of trouble but for the most part they can go to bed by themselves and sleep just fine. We have a routine that works for us but this week - even though it's only 3 days old - has thrown us some major curveballs.
Cash is doing everything in his power to not have to go to sleep even though he is visibly tired from a full day at school. He talks up "scary" things like ghosts and witches and asks for mommy or daddy to lay with him. Just one week ago he was in bed and asleep at 7:30 without so much as a peep. He has woken up in the middle of the night calling for one of us each night this week and has needed a lot of encouragement to get back to sleep. And if he hasn't snuck into our bed at some point in the night, he's been in our room before the sun comes up.
I knew we were really going through some stuff when Cooper cried for an hour last night before he finally fell asleep. I even went and picked him up out of bed - which is something that i never do - because his crying was so pitiful. He cried for mommy and bottle and baby and books.
I think the boys are just experiencing so much change right now they are having a hard time processing it and compartmentalizing it so they can calm their brains and drift off to sleep.
We'll get through this since it's obviously just a phase but I feel sorry for my guys.

"mommy, just tell Ms. Shin that I like to play quietly in the shade."
"all the other kids make too much noise and scream too much."

potty humor

"mommy, did you know the toilet is a swimming pool for poop and pee?"

"that poop was waiting its turn to get out."

1st day of preschool

i'll cut to the chase: the boys did great!

We got to school about 4:30pm to pick them up and went to Cooper's classroom first. Of course Cooper did perfectly. His teacher Ms. Holly leaves at 4pm so the other teacher Ms. Kathy takes the kids who are still there past 4pm and puts them all into her pod. We walked in and Cooper is playing with a helper and one of the other kids. It takes him a minute to realize we are his mommy and daddy and then he gets really excited, gives hugs and immediately tells us to sit down and play with him. Ms. Kathy said that he did so well - she seemed genuinely impressed. She said that she didn't think he cried one time all day, which is saying something because when we dropped him off i think every single kid was crying. His report said that he napped for 1.5 hours so we knew he'd be tired. I messed up in the morning and put his lunch in his cubby instead of the fridge so the teacher threw away his yogurt (i would have still given it to him) and he couldn't have his granola bar because it "could have been processed in a factory with peanuts" - grrr. but overall he did wonderfully! Then we went to get Cash.

Cash also did really well but didn't eat his sunbutter sandwich at lunch - yuck, i wouldn't either. He was wearing his spare shorts so i immediately thought he had an accident because the potties are so small and he couldn't maneuver it. But he just spilled his apple sauce on his lap during lunch. no biggie. Cash's teacher, Ms. Shin, said he did great and she was really impressed with him. However, he was wayyyyy too tired to talk about it. Ms. Shin took pictures with her digital and printed them out to put on the wall for all the parents to see what they did all day - this was really cool and from the looks of it Cash was a busy bee.

On the way home we had a pretty significant meltdown. Both boys were hot and tired and got into daddy's hot car without snacks and it was over. plus there was tremendous commute with lots of traffic, lane closures and accidents. by the time we got home Cash was asleep. Cash had a really hard time getting to sleep last night and asked to sleep in my bed 100 times and then made me lay with him while he talked about all the bad things in the world, ghosts, witches, etc. Finally, I made a deal with him to wait outside his door until he fell asleep. At 4am he woke up asking, "mommy, are you still there?" and when i didn't respond he got very upset and came in our room. I understand he is experiencing a lot of change so we are trying to be patient with him and talk about all the things he is worried about.

We all got up and did it again today.

moving on

Today is the last day with Ms. Sylvia. I can't believe we made this decision but we did and we are moving forward. Cash is so excited to go to a new school with new boys and girls. he wants to know everyone's name. I could probably even convince him to go to school on the weekends he's so excited about it. Cooper will obviously go with the flow and not miss a beat - as long as there is food and toys.
I seem to be the only one who is broken up about this. not because the boys aren't ready for more but because i handed my tiny little babies to some lady and she's loved them and cared for them like they were her own ever since. i've never once worried about how they are getting treated at her house. it was the easiest decision i've made since becoming a mother. Sylvia made everything easier for me. She was the 3rd parent in our family.
Sylvia told me this morning that this past year she attended the police academy of one little boy she took care of until he was 6 years old and another high school graduation of a girl who she used to keep over-night. She's been doing this forever and has seen a lot of little faces come and go and she's just fine and will be just fine. and we will be fine too.
i really hope i keep her in our lives. one way or another.
out of the blue, Cash asked me "but mommy, who am I going to marry?" I told him that he'd have to find a nice person who he loved very much. Then he said, "like you?" !!! So later that night he told Chandler that "mommy and I are getting married."

then the conversation got a little sad because Cash said he was sad that he wasn't invited to mommy and daddy's wedding. and that he wants to see us get married.

Sunday, August 21, 2011

last night Cooper was so physically exhausted he laid down in the middle of the floor to fall asleep. I had taken him with me to pick up dinner and he took a little catnap in the car. I figured we'd get home and he'd eat dinner and then i would get him ready for bed. Nope. I got him out of the car and he made it about 3 steps in the door and just gave up. I put him on the couch while we ate dinner and he didn't even move; just laid there staring at us. I put him to bed and not a peep. he still woke up pretty early but i was able to put him off for a while until the sun came up.

Beach

we had an amazing time at the beach and the boys were very sad to leave. Cash told me more than once, "it's sad to leave bay-cation". Nothing beats playing with cousins, running around in the waves, digging and jumping in the sand, swimming and floating around in a hot tub. Hopefully the boys will have this memory for a long time. And hopefully we can do it again next year (ahem, grammy).
Thanks to bobby we brought home a serious obsession with Thomas the Train.
The boys did well on the way home. We were able to switch our seats around and have a whole row, instead of split 2 and 2. This makes my anxiety a lot less knowing that the person the boys are going to be kicking are family! They were both exhausted after a big week and with some complaining Cooper fell asleep and slept the whole way. Let me tell you, he gets heavy after 3 hours. Cash squirmed and squirmed for 3 hours and finally fell asleep with about 30 minutes left in the flight. We got home and the boys went right to bed - as did mommy and daddy.

Fishes

Cash and Cooper love to swim! This weekend Cash swam all by himself. Cash is obviously more self aware than Cooper so he gets freaked out and scared easier. While Cooper will jump in from the edge of the pool - even without his floaties on - Cash was only attempt to get in the water if someone is there to catch him and hold him. This weekend, donned in his floatie shirt and clutching to a noodle, Cash took off swimming across the pool. He shouted, "look! i'm swimming by myself" and was obviously proud. After the initial shock that he could actually do it he spent the next hour swimming around with Rylie playing all sorts of games.

Copy Coop and chatter box

Warning: Cooper will copy your every move. Cash likes to climb up the outside of the stairs while holding onto the banister. Last night Cooper was doing it. then, like his brother, he let go and fell backwards onto the couch. [insert heart attack].
The other night I was calling Chandler, who was upstairs. Next thing i hear is Cooper yelling, "chandler, chandler, chandler."

While Cash was gone Cooper's vocabulary quadrupled. Not surprisingly. It was probably there all along he just never had a chance to talk. Some of the things he says:
bike
Rylie
Swim
pool
Nona
Car
Truck
Tractor
Waffle
here
this
bath
bubble
gorilla
and so many more. I did also hear him put a few words together. Mostly, "brother bye-bye" or "Cash gone".

Also, he does this thing where he'll call your name and get increasingly louder if you don't respond. and when you do he'll say something so simple like , "here" or "hi".

He's a crack up and very happy and very cute.

Cash went camping

he really, really enjoyed camping. he took to it naturally. he loved getting dirty and spending time outside. he really didn't want to have to come home and hasn't been very warm to me since he's been home. gramma and poppy were fantastic hosts. I'm sure daddy is glad to be home and sleep in his own bed.

quick vacation

a couple weeks ago we went to Carlsbad, Ca for a quick get-away. We really, really enjoyed ourselves. We were slightly familiar with Carlsbad since this was where we came to visit when Rick was stationed over here. We decided to only subject ourselves to two nights in a hotel room with these guys so we left early on Friday morning and drove over. Our first stop was Legoland. it was fun but the boys had only taken short naps in the car so they faded quickly. We got to our hotel around 4 or 5pm, got checked in and then quickly headed out to explore the place.
The Carlsbad Inn was the perfect spot for us. It's made up of a hotel and condos. Next time we'll stay in one of the condos with a kitchen. There is a huge grassy area where all the kids play and the night we checked in there was a band playing and people bbq-ing.
We walked down to the beach, not expecting to play just expecting to check it out. before I knew it, everyone was wet and sandy! the boys loved playing at the beach. Instead of going back to Legoland to use our two-for-one tickets we decided to just stay at the beach. it was the right decision because we could take naps and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the grass.
the next morning Cash and I swam in the pool and then we hit the road to get home before the traffic got too bad.
it was a perfect little escape and a place that i can see us going back to for many years.

funny

Cash has been potty trained for almost a year now. and he's really never had an accident. i'm pretty amazed but not too surprised knowing Cash's personality. For someone who doesn't want to ever be dirty having an accident in your pants isn't really an option!

So yesterday we were over at Rylie's and they were having the best time ever. playing all day. with every toy in the house and then some great imaginary games. Late in the afternoon they were on the swing set in the back having a hysterical time. They got on the teeter totter and were laughing so hard and then all of a sudden Cash starts looking concerned but couldn't stop laughing. he grabbed his pants and said, "oh no! Peeeeeeeee."

I grabbed him off the teeter totter and pulled his pants off to pee. then he told me, "I was going so crazy I pee'd a little bit"

a note on naptime

for a while there we let Cash give up his afternoon nap on the weekends. We thought he was over it or outgrowing a nap. But we were walking on eggshells as to not upset him and miserable come 6pm. and continuing the misery when we tried to get Cash to fall asleep.

For the past few weekends we have reinstated the naptime for Cash - against his will for sure! But we forced him to lay down and sleep. it wasn't easy but Chandler and i are sort of experts when it comes to being tough about sleep so we knew if we just forced it, Cash would succumb (sooner rather than later).

I find that he is obviously a better, nicer, easier boy if he sleeps - even for an hour - and that he falls asleep faster when it is bed time. Whereas he was laying in bed talking, singing and carrying on for hours (and hours) when he wouldn't nap, now he is asleep within 20-30 minutes.

It just goes to show that kids need sleep. And sleep really effects them. positively and negatively.

disclaimer: I am lucky that my kids are both good sleepers naturally and there is probably only so much a parent can do to get their child to sleep if it isn't in them to sleep.

Memorial day weekend

we had a nice weekend. we tried to stay busy but respectful of naptime and i think we did a pretty good job.
The boys have been waking up really early on weekends - between 5-6am. On Saturday we got up and went down to ride the train in Boulder City and then went to lunch. We got home and everyone laid down for a nap while Chandler went to the gym. I went to visit Dana in the hospital after she had her twins on Friday. That night Chandler and I got a babysitter for the boys and went to the movies!! woohoo!!
Sunday we were once again up early and took our bagels and coffee over to see Lindsey, Noah, Rylie and Grandma after Grandma had an evening in the hospital for her leg. Cash and I ended up spending the entire day with them while Chandler and Cooper spent some time together at home. I took Rylie and Cash to the movies and then they played together all afternoon.
Monday we didn't do much except for errands and played and napped.
The boys were really good and everyone was really relaxed tonight as we wound down our long weekend.

Chandler and I realized this weekend that Cooper is starting to string two words together. "Hi Cash", "go there" and others. He's a great little boy. so fearless and loving. He offers hugs and kisses and loves to be with his mommy. He's just the right mixture of rugged little boy and sweetheart. Today i caught him climbing on top of his play kitchen. he also loves to play in the car. he sits in the drivers seat and pushes all the buttons and turns the steering wheel.

Cash on the other hand is still a piece of work. He's as smart as a whip. He is learning his letters and actually is starting to write them. today he showed me a "C" and an "S" that he drew. But he's runs so hot and cold. I actually think he's got a bit of my personality because he does really good until he gets hungry and then it's all over. Cash is hitting Cooper much more than i would like. He will just swing at Cooper when he's walking by or feels like Cooper is going to get his stuff. We are working on what he "should" do when he feels like hitting Cooper but he's still working on it. we'll continue positive reinforcement which seems to work wonders on this kid.
Cash is also starting to fib and while i shouldn't be surprised, i really don't want him to do this. He lied to daddy today when he was asked if he hit Cooper and he lied to me about drawing on the couch - when he was holding the orange marker. i know it isn't malicious so now he just has to learn that its ok to tell the truth and apologize.

I-teeth

Cooper has been working on his incisors for a while now. Cooper teething has been so much more of a process than Cash. i remember that Cash would just wake up with teeth and we would have no idea they were even coming. with Cooper you know they are coming and it takes forever. they do that thing where they appear one day and the next day the gums are so swollen they disappear and then they have to come back up all over again.
right now he has 4 very puffy spaces between is group of front teeth and his first molars. he doesn't get cranky too much but when he does it isn't pretty. hopefully they'll be all in soon and we wont have to worry about it anymore. but for now he'll chew on his fingers or toes or anything in his reach.
Even Emma at daycare says to watch out for Cooper because he bites.

Cash the teacher

Even though they can fight a lot there are times when the boys are really sweet to each other. The other morning they were sitting together and Cash was asking Cooper to repeat after him. he would say, "Cooper, say dog." and Cooper would say "dog." They went on like this for probably 20 minutes until Cash got into some really hard phrases. I could tell Cooper liked the attention from Cash and Cash loved the immediate feedback from his brother.
I told Cash he was being such a good teacher and he informed me that he wasn't a teacher. He was just a little boy and teachers are big boys.

Speaking of them fighting and repeating words...Cash and Cooper will get into "NO" screaming matches that seem to go on forever. Cash was scream "NO" at Cooper for doing something Cash doesn't want him to do - probably taking a toy or something. And Cooper will hunker down, put his hands on his knees and say, "NO" right back. they will do this back and forth until Cooper starts laughing.

Cash is also starting to push or hit Cooper for no reason. Just walking by he'll push/shove him which i don't like at all and we're going to nip it in the bud quickly. i hope. the problem is that Cooper will copy Cash and hit/shove back and i'm not sure how to discipline Cooper yet.

weekend update

we had a really nice weekend. and that makes all the difference to go to work/school on Monday. here's your blow by blow recap:

  • Friday, Sylvia was closed so i took the day off to spend with the boys. i must do this more often because it makes Cash so happy and i can tell a difference in him when he thinks that we are staying home to do something special together. I took the boys out to get a bagel for breakfast where we saw Jim and Mari Germain. Then, we met up with a friend of mine, Angie, and her two little boys Gavin (3) and Hunter (1) at the Springs Preserve. It was a really nice morning and only slightly warm. We played at the playground for a little while and then went and explored in the museum part of the preserve. We did some activities and then saw some cool lizards, scorpions, tortoises, a grey fox and bunnies. We stayed until lunch time and then came home to eat and nap. Everyone was so good and well behaved.

  • Saturday, we got up and loaded into the car to grab some doughnuts and took the boys out to Calico Basin to run around on the boardwalk. We are almost at the point where we can walk a train but not quite yet. the best part was chasing the lizards. Cash would crouch down and watch them for a while and then Cooper would stomp in and try to grab them. Very telling of their personalities. The boys got hot and tired so they waited in the picnic area while Slider and I ran up the trail to the top of the basin rim. it was so beautiful up there, next time i'll pack my camera. Saturday afternoon/evening I had Dana's baby shower (which was great) back out at a friend's house at, of all places, Calico Basin. So i spent the most beautiful part of the day sipping sangria up in the Red Rocks which Chandler and the boys were home - napping and not napping.

  • Sunday we celebrated Lindsey Loop's nuptials with a family breakfast. Since Chandler was such a good guy pitching in for a much longer than expected "mommy's afternoon out" on Saturday, i let him off the hook so he could get some things done. And The boys and i went to breakfast without daddy. We had a nice breakfast and once again, there was no fighting, screaming and everyone listened and did what i asked. Cash and Rylie played for a while after breakfast and then we went home to take naps. Once the boys woke up we took them out to Bonnie Springs to see the animals and ride the train. the really loved it. Cash is always cautious around the animals and likes the more docile ones but Cooper will just go right up to anything. at one point we turned around and Cooper had gone under the stanchion, right up to the bobcat cage and was sticking his finger through petting the bobcat. Chandler and i both jumped about a mile in the air. Cooper was the perfect height to get under the ropes so he got a lot more "petting" out of the petting zoo than the other kids. he even tried to climb into the pen with a reindeer.

  • Sunday night everyone slept really well!

Cooper is incredibly verbal these days. it makes things simultaneously easier and harder. for the most part he can tell you what he wants but if there's a word we can't quite figure out he gets very frustrated because in his head he's saying the word.
some of Coops favorites:
Cash - sounds more like Ash
Daddy
Mommy - finally!
Eat
Juice
Milk
Snack
Shoes
Socks
No - no no no and shaking his head
up
Eat - he says this one a lot
Bye-Bye - as soon as you put his shoes on he b-lines to the door, waving and saying bye bye
nigh-nigh
book
bottle
blankie

the other night Cash hit 6 home runs in a row! we lost a few of the balls but it was worth it to see how happy it made him. Chandler really does well at pitching to him.
we are hoping to switch the boys to a new preschool/daycare in the fall. we love Ms. Sylvia and are so thankful she's in our lives but we are ready for the boys to be in a learning environment. UNLV has one of the best preschools in the city and the school that Chandler is working at next year is on the UNLV campus and right next door.
We are #1 and #3 on the waiting list.
you can check out the school's website here.
the other night we went to the desert to throw rocks and give Chachi a little exercise. on the way home the dog was tired and panting. Cash totally blew us away by explaining that dogs get hot and their fur makes them hot and they sweat through their tongues.
he is so smart these days. and he also hears everything you say. so we're being very deliberate with our words.
Cash is starting to learn his letters and letter sounds.

Cooper-Cat

Cooper is copying everything that Cash does. right down to bad habits. Cooper says "no" and pushes when he doesn't like something. He is sneaky and mischievous. He will steal things and run away and hide. He's trouble. And fast. Chandler and I always talked about how slow Cash was when he was little. He never ran. Cooper is the opposite. He runs everywhere! and i think he's kind of fast.
He loves to read books. and he is starting to be funny. He will babble something and then crack himself up. like his own little personal joke. He's sweet and loving but also rough and tumble.
Cooper never minds getting dirty - another complete 180 from his brother!

"Cooper is learning how to talk good"

Cash reminds me daily that he is teaching Cooper how to talk. its very sweet. Cooper now says lots of words - although if you don't live in our house i wonder if you'd be able to pick up on them. He says "balloon" and "ball" all the time now. "Nigh-night" and "thank you" are two very popular phrases right now also. But more than anything Cooper loves to give "five". he says it and sticks his hand out for everyone to slap! so cute.

always happy

somehow Cooper got sick. and i really would not have thought a thing of it except he was wheezing a bit during his sleep so the next day i took him to the doctor. he was laughing and playing with Cash while we waited for the doctor and he was so patient and relaxed while the doctor looked at him we were all surprised with the diagnosis. He has another ear infection and a croupy cough. the doctor said that she was totally surprised because he was so good tempered (a different doctor today). but we got something for the cough and something for the ear and were out of there no worse for wear.

Cooper said "belly" this morning

When i was taking his overnight diaper off Cooper pointed to his belly and said, "belly". it was loud and clear. i guess it only makes sense that this is among his first (real) words.

snotty noses

both boys had a great weekend but they were sneezie, snotty, puffy messes by the end. i really think it might be allergies because they have the same exact symptoms and no fever - i don't really know thought. Cash is in an incredibly adorable loving stage right now telling us how much he loves us. and how much he likes us. he loves to cuddle and snuggle and is just really, really sweet. Cooper is such a fun little boy too. he loves his daddy and brother - he can probably take or leave me - and always follows them around and makes sure he knows where they are at all times. He is pretty tough and isn't afraid to get into it with his brother. We are glad to have the nice weather back and tonight the boys were playing outside in the street with the other kids when i got home. Cash went down to Devin's house to play while i got dinner cooked and then Cooper and i came down in the wagon to get him. we're all excited for Spring! Grandma and Poppy come at the end of this week and Cash can't wait to play Candyland with everyone. He has asked every day for the past 3 days if Grandma and Poppy were here yet. i guess he's pretty excited. I'm getting ready to go to High Point so I really hope everyone survives while i'm gone (including me).

Dear American Academy of Pediatrics,
you try telling Cooper he needs to be facing backwards again.
Good luck,
Carolyn

It looks like Cooper is starting to really stick up for himself. Today he slapped Cash across the face and laughed. i know he didn't do this on purpose but its hard to explain that to Cash. he loves to chase Cash around - the two of them can really get into trouble fast, running around, slamming doors.
He copies Cash in all sorts of things. making noises, facial expressions are two things i noticed today that Cooper did right after Cash did them.
Today i also caught him dragging the laundry basket over to the window, flipping it upside down and climbing up on it. he stood on it and looked out the window for quite a few minutes before thought it would be funny to fall off - hoping that someone would catch him. (we did).
He also loves to call out for Cash. whenever Cash isn't in the room or Cooper is looking for him, he'll call "Cash" until he finds him.
today i thanked Cash for doing something i asked him to do. his response: "it's my pleasure."

cash has been doing such an awesome job with pooping. Dr. G warned us that it may take some time for his brain and body to reconnect but since he's been cleaned out (i think we got the last of the old stinkies out late last week) he's had no accidents. he will tell us when he has to poop and everything is in the potty! yay Cash!

Touch a Truck

DSC00110, originally uploaded by carolyn_martin.

today we went to Touch a Truck. It was freezing cold and windy but the boys had a good time. I think the weather caught everyone off guard, especially since it was 80 all week. The boys got to see/touch/sit in a tow truck, cement truck, ambulance, fire trucks, ladder truck, first responder truck, swat truck, big rig tow truck, dump truck, tractor, and more. But i think their favorite was some guy's Ford Ranger. i'm not even sure he was part of Touch a Truck. but they jumped in his little pick up and messed everything up! I was laughing because there were so many kids and they were just going to town in the cabs of these trucks/vehicles and i get frustrated when someone moves my rearview mirror! i can't imagine what happens when they fire up the tow truck the next time!
Cash was really excited about the fire trucks and enjoyed looking through the firemans' maps.
eventually we got too cold to stick around any longer and took Cooper home for a nap.

more brothers for Cash

last weekend Cash told me that he'd like more brothers and that these can be their names:
  1. Donald
  2. Train rider
  3. Baby Crawler
  4. Sister
Cooper is starting to put words together. mostly "hi Cash" or "bye daddy".
he is doing a lot of the things i remember Cash doing as a little boy like in the morning once i strap his shoes on him he makes a b-line for the door and says, "bye".
he climbs on anything. up on chairs, stools, into the car.
this morning he must have reached up onto the stove and tuned one of the knobs because we got home from work and the house was filled with gas - and smelled terrible. I got home and Chandler and the boys were just playing around. Chandler goes, "something stinks". Yeah, that's gas. Lets get out of here. we opened doors and windows, packed up dinner and spent the evening at the park. It was a nice excuse but it wasn't as warm tonight as it has been the rest of the week.
I fear we are going to have to give Cooper a haircut this weekend. he is getting awfully scraggly. and people are calling him a girl much too often. No one EVER called Cash a girl. Cooper gets called a "her", "she", "girl" at least once every couple of months. Just last weekend it happend twice. in one weekend! and he was dressed in obvious boy clothes. blues and more blue. he is beautiful though.

full of it

Cash has been having some real problems lately but i think we are on the mend - so now i can talk about it.
For the past few months, longer than I would like to admit, he has been having very intense problems with his tummy. He just wouldn't poop. Cash had been a perfect potty user up until that point. I dont think he ever had an accident since he started wearing underpants. It started with a little constipation probably because he didn't have enough water one day or maybe he didn't want to stop what he was doing to go to the bathroom. However it happened he got constipated, it was hard to poop and it hurt. When it finally did come out it caused some small tears in his bottom which cause him a lot of pain with subsequent poops. So he just decided to stop. stop pooping altogether. he would squeeze his bottom together so hard that he wouldn't let the poop come out. this was causing everyone a lot of stress. Cash was upset and cranky a lot of the time. He was so full of it nothing made him happy. Mommy and Daddy were getting increasingly frustrated that he wouldn't just unclench his butt and go! so after a couple very serious days of unhappiness we went to see the doctor. He was going up to 7 days without anything so we had to get some professional help. Especially after an enema didn't work. Cash overpowered an enema! Dr. Goebel was great. She told us he had an impacted bowel and encopresis (you can google it but just know that we were changing underpants up to 4 times a day) and gave us some ways to help Cash through this. Almost immediately his attitude changed. i think just hearing Dr. Goebel say that it was ok made him feel better (i'm sure mommy freaking out didn't help him). So we started Cash on 2 Miralax treatments per day (this is a lot!) and after 2 days we had to give him an enema. WOW. I will just say this: he was seriously backed up. And now that the blockage has been moved and the softener is working he is going a lot. but unfortunately his bowel is a little "untrained" so he's having a lot of accidents. we need to figure out what the right amount of Miralax is for him and make sure we encourage him to use the potty. he'll start doing better. he's already doing better.

Pirate Cash

If Cash isn't careful he's gonna get his wish of becoming a real pirate with a real hook. He loves to play sword fighting and most of the time it isn't a battle i'm willing to fight with him. He takes the butter knives out of the drawer and runs around with them. last night he got his hands on one of the serrated knives from the dishwasher and almost immediately cut his hand - pretty badly. It pretty much ruined the rest of his night and all he wanted to do was snuggle with me on the couch while i applied pressure to his wound. Unfortunately the cut is in a very uncomfortable place and will surely get bumped and snagged all day today. He refused to put a bandaid on it. I did hear him tell his daddy that we can't play with swords anymore. so at least he learned his lesson. for today.

Catching up on February: all the other stuff edition

After Grammy got an unwelcomed wake up call we said our good bye's and took her to the airport. The next weekend we all had a 3 day weekend and Chandler decided to take us on a little trip to somewhere new. The weather in Las Vegas was cold and rainy so rather than spending the day inside we spend a few hours in the car and drove over to California to see the Santa Monica pier. The boys had a great time playing on the beach and Cash loved running in the water. the weather was again perfect (seems to be a theme for California). We didn't spend the night so at about 4pm we got a bite to eat at a really amazing shopping center just a couple blocks from the pier and hit the road again. it was a great way to spend a Sunday since we still had 2 full days to get all our weekend errands done. Except that i'm still knocking sand out of pockets!

The boys have been extremely active these days. i think its just that Cooper is 100% mobile and causing chaos and destruction wherever he goes. he's tough as nails compared to Cash who has always been more sensitive. I'm glad that spring is right around the corner because having them outside seems to diffuse a lot of the craziness. And Cash and Chandler are getting pretty good at hitting the wiffle balls of the tee.

Catching Up on February: Disneyland edition

First of all, sorry i've been so quiet lately. i've had some serious computer issues and honestly there is very little time for me to do these things lately. I have two little boys running my life right now. and they rarely schedule time for blogging.
ok, enough excuses. February has been fun, busy and stressful all at the same time.
I got through with market and moved right into my birthday. it was nice. i took the day off work to spend the day by myself! i cleaned, i ran errands, i was very busy. that night Chandler took me to dinner and a movie - we saw the King's Speech and i thought it was very good. Chandler might have fallen asleep. We didn't do anything for the Superbowl and that was just fine with us.
Grammy showed up the next week to spend some time with the boys and take us to Disneyland. I was totally shocked when Cash asked if Wiley was coming with us because it had been months (Christmas) since we had talked about that. Luckily, by the time we actually got to Disneyland Cash had forgotten about it. We left for Disney in the afternoon and after a short plane ride, long wait for a bus and what felt like an even longer shuttle ride, we got there in one piece. The boys were pretty crazy the first night and no one slept well. we ordered room service and just tried to keep calm as the boys destroyed the hotel room. looking back we probably could have just given them a few garbage cans to push around and stack and they would have been fine.
The next morning we headed over to the park. It was a great experience and the weather was perfect. We rode a handful of rides quickly before the boys started to get hungry. Its a small world seems to be the ultimate crowd pleaser. Cash was totally amazed and Cooper was dancing along. It was also a nice opportunity to cool off as the weather started to get a little warmer. we had lunch and went on a few more rides with Cash as Cooper napped in his stroller. It turns out that as much as Cash likes pirates he does NOT like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. He's never clung to me tighter. as the ride was pulling back into the loading station he said to Chandler and I, "I never, never, ever want to go on that ride again." I'll be sure to remind him of that when he's older. His most favorite ride, ironically, was the Jungle Cruise which i was informed that i didn't enjoy as a little girl. But i swear that they made that boat much smaller now and the animals used to be real. We headed back across the monorail to our hotel in the late afternoon for some rest time and dinner. Cooper fell asleep in his stroller again right after dinner so Grammy and I went back to the room to put him down while Chandler and Cash stayed in Downtown Disney and looked in the shops. Except i don't think they got much further than the Lego store. Cooper was out for the count so i headed back out to meet up with Chandler and Cash and we watched the fireworks and then headed back for a much better 2nd night's sleep.
The next day we got up and had breakfast with Goofy and the rest of the Disney Characters. We were visited by Chip, Dale, Jasmine, Baloo, Pluto and others. Cooper just ate and ate and ate. We headed back home that afternoon.
We all really enjoyed our first trip to Disneyland and are thankful for our Grammy!

Cooper's words

i thought i should take note of some of the words cooper is saying. along with a ton of babbling he is saying:

"uh oh"
"hi"
"hello"
"bye-bye"
"thank you" (this is really cute)
"chachi" (and, hi chachi)
my favorite, "Cash" - he actually yells this when he can't find his brother
"juice"
"mama"
"daddy"

Stranger Danger

Last night Cash and i drove to the airport to pick up Grammy. As i often do, i took the opportunity while we were alone in the car to talk about some important things. tonight's topic was not talking to strangers. i like to casually talk to Cash about things like this so i don't scare or worry him with a big discussion. So i casually asked him if he knew what a stranger was. he said no, so i told him that it was a person that he didn't know and someone that mommy and daddy didn't know. and then i mentioned to him that you shouldn't speak to strangers. he asked why. i told him because they might not be nice and they might scare him. he asked why again. again, i told him that if mommy and daddy aren't there you can't talk to people you don't know because they might not be nice. and then he added, "yeah, and they might have a lasso and try to lasso around your neck. And then you would cough."

there you have it. you never know when a stranger with a lasso is gonna getcha.

Nutella Bread

totally made this one up. but its good and Chandler is forever happy because of it.

i had two frozen bread doughs on Sunday. I was going to make 2 stromboli but by the time i was done with the first i didn't want to make another. so i rolled out the dough and spread an entire jar (the small jar) of Nutella on it. then i rolled up the bread dough and plopped it into a greased bread pan and baked at 350 for 30 minutes.

it was delish hot, right out of the oven but also good this morning toasted. this makes me want to make a cinnamon raisin loaf too. that would be pretty easy.

Thursday, February 3, 2011

tonight Cash was messing around in Sylvia's front yard as Chandler was putting Cooper in the car and he fell into her cactus garden. he got really scraped up on his leg and had a bunch of stickers in his leg/knee and pants. Chandler saved the day and pulled all but one of the stickers out with his teeth! the last one is still in there and Cash isn't letting anyone near it anytime soon. HOpefully it will work its way out before it gets swollen.

crabbies

join us in our crabbie feast on Sunday! as requested by Chandler.

  • 8 ounces white crabmeat - use the lump or fancy (i like the lumpier better)
  • 1 (5-ounce) jar Cheddar-horseradish spread (recommended: Kraft Old English) - its in the snack section of the grocery store
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), softened
  • english muffins - halved/split open, whatever i just remember that once i made them and didn't open them up - dumb.

optional - cayenne pepper for a little kick - i have never done this.

Directions

In a large bowl, combine crab, cheese spread, mayonnaise, garlic powder, butter and hot sauce. Divide mixture evenly over english muffins and spread. I lay all the english muffins on a baking sheet to spread them with the crab topping and then put them in the freezer for about 15 minutes. when you take them out of the freezer its way easier to cut them in quarters. Bake until topping is heated through and golden brown on top, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Cooper is getting all four of his 1st molars. and he isn't happy about it. his teeth hurt him so badly he's actually been crying big tears. which for Coop is rare.

Operation Dummy Drop: Night #1

Cooper went straight to bed. We've dropped his bottle too (meanies). He's got a really stuffy nose so its probably a relief to not have a dummy. He's sleeping.

Cash didn't cry or make a big deal about no dummy but he hasn't fallen asleep yet. he's called out for us about 6 times and faked one bathroom trip. He's currently talking to himself but i think he'll fall asleep. He seemed very into the fact that i was so proud of him for giving his dummies to the babies at the hospital. he kept asking me if i was happy and proud.

yes i am.

Dummy Boot Camp

dummy boot camp starts this weekend for all 3 boys. i feel Chandler is going to suffer most. he hates to hear the boys cry or fuss so he goes straight for the dummy.
Cooper has a head cold so its not easy for him to keep a dummy in his mouth right now anyway. Cash is going to be a little harder to convince. i think we're going to pack up all the dummies and send them to the babies at the hospital. he seems interested in that idea.

pro tip

if you are having a hard time brushing your youngster's teeth try this. lay his head on your lap so when you look down the two of you are looking in different directions. this is easiest to achieve when the child is sitting on, and with legs wrapped around, another adult. lay the child's head back and brush the teeth as you would your own. the other adult can hold the child's hands if necessary. since the brushing movement would be similar to that of brushing your own teeth you are less likely to brush too hard, poke the child's gums or push the brush too far back in the mouth.

Cash sees the Dentist

This morning Cash went to see Dr. Amy. She's a pediatric dentist. I didn't have very high hopes for this visit since Cash hates to brush his teeth and the last time we went to the dentist he pretty much just cowered in my arms the whole time. Dr. Amy is a pediatric dentist so that was the first step in the right direction. There are lots of toys in the waiting room and friendly office staff and hygienists to make the kiddos feel comfortable. They do not pressure the kids to do anything they don't want to and focus on making the experience enjoyable and stress-free (mother, take note! i am sure these pediatric dentists existed when i was younger).

Cash didn't want to have his x-rays taken, so he didn't but he did sit in the chair with the big heavy jacket on and got to look at the camera - when it came time to put the bite guards in his mouth he was done. so we moved on. He sat in the dental chair for a few minutes and played with the stuffed animals - who all had dentures. Cash brushed their teeth for a while and showed Dr. Amy how he brushed but when it came time to laying back he got freaked. so he sat in my lap as Dr. Amy told us all about how pacifiers could do irreversible damage to a pallet! and how children really should only be drinking juice/milk twice a day with meals. so right there i thought i was going to be in big trouble when the exam started! But i held Cash in my lap and he laid his head on Dr. Amy's lap and she examined his teeth with her little mirror. She said he had no cavities that she could see (and only x-rays could show cavities between teeth) and there was no decay that she could see either. She did say that he has a pretty good cross bite - he does have a cute little crooked mouth doesn't he? And she said that he'll need an appliance at some point to correct that. She said that he has some crowding too.

None of these things came as a surprise to me - have you seen my oral history? and i am sure that Cash and I will be spending a lot of time in dentist's and orthodontist's offices over the years. but i promise him that i'll make it as painless as possible. He got a little stuffed animal as a parting gift and on the way home in the car he was showing the bear how to floss his teeth!

Cash's 3 year measurements

38 lbs
38 1/2 inches tall (he grew 8 inches over the last 12 months)
18% BMI (i didn't know that they measured this)

he did so well at the doctor and we love our pediatrician so much. she and Cash looked at pictures of pirates on her computer and he told her about Braid Beard the pirate and what pirates looks like. and somewhere in between all that talk of pirates she did his complete physical!
he got one shot and screamed "owwwchiiii" and then asked if he could go get a lollipop. i was so proud of him for being so good.

we broke our baby

Cooper has his first ear infection. Actually, this is the first ear infection our family has experienced. we thought something was up but figured that if he actually had an ear infection that he'd be a lot crankier. When Chandler took him to get his flu shot he asked if they'd look in his ears and sure enough he has a little infection. nothing too serious but he's on 10 days of the bubble gum stuff.

Over Christmas he also got really sick - well, sick for us considering our boys thankfully have never been too ill. he threw up a couple times and had a really high fever. a few doses of motrin and a few snuggles with mom and he was back to normal.

3 years old is looking pretty good

Today we had Rylie over for a playdate and we set up the tent and tunnel that the boys got for Christmas. they loved it and played in it for a long time.
After Rylie left we kept the tent part up and Cash just popped his head out of it and said, "I love my tent." "Thank you for getting this tent for me." "I love you daddy and mommy."

wow - right now i don't want to ring his neck.

a few minutes ago - well that was a different story. he pooped his pants and squished it on purpose so it was a huge mess.

Cooper at 1 year

sorry i've been slacking on the blog...
Cooper turned 1 during my digital hiatus. The weekend he turned one we took the boys to Ely, NV to ride the Polar Express train. It was fun and Cash enjoyed it. The boys really liked the change of scenery and couldn't get enough of the hotel room. Cooper just walked back and forth in the hotel room and pulled out every plug he could get his hands on, knocked things off the counters, climbed into drawers and up on ledges. We spend one night and hit the road early in the morning to get home to Cooper's presents.
Cooper turned one without a lot of fanfair. Sylvia had a party at her house for him to which i sent cupcakes and party favors. He got a few new toys (that his brother has stolen and since given back). His one year check up went very well and he was given a "good boy" and "average" status - although he's anything but average in our book. He got all the answers right and is developing perfectly. He weighs 22lbs.
At one year Cooper:
  • eats a lot, anything and everything really
  • loves to feed the dog and thinks its pretty funny to be sly about it
  • likes to feed other people and will force nubs of chewed up cookies or crackers into my mouth - yummm
  • dances to music - whether it be a tv commercial or if mommy is singing a song Cooper will bop up and down to the beat.
  • clicks his tongue
  • finally got more teeth. he sat with 2 top and 2 bottom for the longest time and now he has 4 on top and 4 on bottom
  • sleeps very well 7-7 most nights and will take an nap very easily. lately i've noticed that he's starting to drop his 2nd nap and combining the 2 into one mid-day snooze.
  • is always happy. he doesn't fuss and is so tough.
  • walking all over but wants to run so badly. he'll start going very fast but can't keep up with himself and topple right over.
  • loves to put things into other things. one of his favorite toys is a new peek-a-boo puzzle with little magnetic items underneath that he can put in and out
  • smiles so much
  • loves peek a boo and hide and seek. in a couple more months will be really good at hide and seek and already can find Cash hiding under blankest and behind doors.
  • mostly, Cooper loves his brother - he'll follow Cash everywhere and wants to play with him all the time.
  • Cooper is starting to be able to communicate a lot more. will shake his head "no" or "yes" and says Dada all the time. he even said hi dada the other day. he likes to say "uh oh" too.

We just love our not-so-little Cooper. he's a perfect boy!
